2023 Subaru Solterra Preview

Subaru has long been known for vehicles that can go anywhere in an efficient and reliable fashion. However, in the United States, Subaru has never sold an EV, but now the company hopes to change that with the Solterra, its first global all-electric vehicle and a dedicated SUV designed to regularly venture off-road. Coming standard with all-wheel-drive (a common Subaru hallmark) and 8.3 inches of ground clearance, the Solterra is intended to retain the characteristics Subarus are known for while generating zero emissions on the road.

Noteworthy features include an infotainment system that comes with a 12.3-inch touchscreen and smartphone app connectivity that enables owners to remotely control the climate control system as well as lock and unlock the Solterra. As an SUV, the Solterra has an X-MODE off-road mode and a Grip Control feature that has hill ascent and descent control systems. For added usability, there is up to 30 cubic feet of cargo room behind the back seats. Roof rails are also available to cart even more cargo.

In the powertrain department, the Solterra’s front and rear electric motors generate 215 horsepower while providing an estimated more than 220 miles of range. Numerous safety features come standard such the Subaru’s EyeSight driver assistance suite and blind spot monitoring with lane change assist. A Parking Support Brake that can apply the brakes if an obstacle is detected while reversing comes standard too.

As Subaru’s first-ever electric vehicle for the American market, the Solterra is aiming to entice past and present Subaru customers to stay in the fold instead of looking to other brands for an EV. Since the Solterra is developed to have the proportions and interior space of a compact SUV, the company will likely succeed in that goal. And for those looking to venture off the beaten path while generating no tailpipe emissions, it may be difficult to look past Subaru's newest electric vehicle.
